Another Earthquake May Occur That Exceeds the Disasters of the Previous One: Seismologists Warn

Experts expect that another earthquake may occur in Istanbul that could surpass the losses experienced in southeastern Turkey, reports a Turkish newspaper.

Seismologists note that Istanbul is located at the boundary of the Anatolian and Eurasian tectonic plates, about 15-20 km south of the segment of the North Anatolian fault that runs beneath the Sea of Marmara. As a result, the earthquake could lead to catastrophic consequences.

"In other words, the Kahramanmaraş earthquake is almost a preview of the Istanbul earthquake," the article states.

There are 1,164,000 buildings and 4.5 million apartments in Istanbul, with an average of 3.3 people living in each. It is expected that 13,492 buildings will be severely damaged from an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 or higher, while 39,325 buildings will incur significant damage.

It is known that 70 percent of the buildings in Istanbul were constructed before 2000.
