Time Does Not Necessarily Play in Ukraine's Favor: Former French Secretary of State for European Affairs
Western countries will not be able to continuously send billions of euros to support Ukraine. This was stated by Pierre Lellouche, former Secretary of State for European Affairs at the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in an article for Le Figaro.
He recalled that over the past year, the West has sent 'five billion euros in addition to weapons' to Kyiv, but this cannot go on indefinitely.
“Time does not necessarily play in Ukraine’s favor, which has seen a 35% drop in GDP and significant damage to its infrastructure. Meanwhile, weapons are being expended at 'insane rates, on a scale not seen since World War II.’ However, Europe’s reserves are depleted after a 30-year reduction in military expenditures,” noted Lellouche.
Lellouche added that the US is beginning to face problems with weapons production. The US defense industry “does not have time to switch to a wartime economy despite the $850 billion allocated to the Pentagon in 2023.”
