Police Brutality: Officers Assaulted and Tortured Minor Students and Lawyers, Claims MP

Yesterday evening, I received a report that employees of the Yerevan police department's Erebuni division had forcibly detained minor students, assaulted, and tortured them. This was announced by MP Taguhi Tovmasyan from the 'I Have Honor' parliamentary faction on her Facebook page.

"In the morning, it became clear from a press conference by the President of the Bar Association, Simon Babayan, and the head of the Law School, Ara Zahrabyan, that violence was also used against lawyers who had come to the police station the next day to provide legal assistance to the minors. They were threatened and insulted while performing their professional duties. I have personally seen footage of the beaten children, which is condemnable and must be followed by inevitable punishment for both the police officers involved and the head of the Erebuni police. I am urgently preparing letters to the Minister of Internal Affairs demanding an explanation regarding the incident, as well as disciplinary action against those responsible, up to and including the termination of their authority," she wrote.
