"Do Not Create Hostility from History": Turkey Responds Heavily to Mexico's Senate Recognition of Armenian Genocide

Turkey's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reacted to Mexico's Senate recognition of the Armenian Genocide, calling it a "political attempt to rewrite history," according to ermenihaber.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry rejected and condemned the decision by the Mexican Senate, stating that it supposedly contradicts the 1948 UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide and European Court of Human Rights rulings.

Meanwhile, the Mexican Senate cited the necessity of protecting universal human rights while passing the resolution acknowledging the Armenian Genocide.

"It is unfortunate that this dangerous decision by the Mexican Senate coincided with search and rescue operations for earthquake victims involving groups coming from Mexico, and it does not align with Turkey-Mexico friendship," the Turkish Foreign Ministry's statement read.

Finally, the Turkish foreign office urged the Mexican Senate to "correct this erroneous step" and "not to create hostility from history."
