The death toll from the powerful earthquake in Turkey has exceeded five thousand, according to the latest reports. This was announced to journalists by the country's Minister of Health, Fahrettin Koca, as reported by Life.ru.

“At this point, we have 5,434 fatalities and 31,777 injured,” said the head of Turkey's Ministry of Health.

It is important to note that a powerful earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale occurred in southeastern Turkey on the night of February 6. Its epicenter was located 26 kilometers from the city of Gaziantep, home to over a million people. The tremors were felt in neighboring Syria and several other countries, including Russia.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has declared a nationwide mourning period until February 12.
