Expert States: Can Turkey's Earthquake Affect Armenia's Seismic Situation?

Armenia is located quite far from the epicenter of the earthquake occurring in Turkey. There is no threat to Armenia's territory, and this powerful earthquake cannot affect Armenia's seismic situation.

In a conversation with Armenpress, Sergey Nazaretian, the chief expert of the "Seismic Protection Territorial Service" and a Doctor of Sciences, stated that the earthquake that occurred on the morning of February 6 has affected a large area and caused extensive damage.

According to the latest updates from the Turkish network, the magnitude of the earthquake was 7.8. To compare, the Spitak earthquake had a magnitude of 7.0. An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 rates over 10 on the scale, approximately 11. Considering that specialists estimate the depth to be between 7 to 10 kilometers, the scale of destruction will be very significant.

The earthquake has also partially affected the territory of Syria, with the destruction zone reaching as far as Aleppo. The consequences will be very severe for both Turkey and Syria in terms of human and material losses. The number of casualties is reported based on the number of bodies recovered. I am convinced that this number will be very large. There are also casualties in the north-western regions of Syria, areas extending to Aleppo,” said the seismologist.

The seismologist emphasized that Armenia is far enough from the epicenter of this earthquake. “In this respect, I am confident that there is no threat to Armenia’s territory, and this powerful earthquake cannot affect Armenia’s seismic situation.” He then addressed the rumors that there could be an earthquake on the same day every year, stating that speaking about the periodicity of earthquakes is incorrect.
