Earthquake Did Not Impact Turkey's Nuclear Safety, IAEA Reports

Today, it was reported that Turkey's nuclear safety was not affected by the earthquakes that occurred. This information comes from РИА Новости, citing the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

“At this moment, the earthquakes have not impacted Turkey's nuclear safety,” a Turkish nuclear regulator informed the IAEA, adding that there have been no issues related to radiological safety and the protection of radioactive sources, and that the nuclear power plant currently under construction in the country has not been harmed.

It is worth noting that a 7.8 magnitude earthquake occurred during the night, followed by several smaller tremors that flattened entire neighborhoods in major Turkish cities and parts of Syria. Orhan Tatar, a representative of Turkey's disaster management agency, stated to reporters that the two earthquakes are not related.

Hundreds of people continue to remain trapped under rubble on both sides of the border. The World Health Organization has warned that it expects a “significant” rise in the number of casualties as rescue workers continue search operations in the debris, where the bodies of people who were sleeping during the earthquake are located, according to the Daily Mail.
