Turkey Cannot Support Sweden's NATO Membership, Cavusoglu Says

Turkey's Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu has announced that under current circumstances, Turkey cannot support Sweden's application to join NATO, and Ankara will be ready to reconsider this issue if Stockholm fulfills its obligations.

Cavusoglu made this statement during a joint press conference with Hungary’s Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto in Budapest on January 31.

He reminded that the idea of NATO's creation was originally based on ensuring the security of all member countries. “Therefore, all candidate countries, including Sweden and Finland, must take Ankara's security stance into account,” emphasized Cavusoglu.

“We are aware of Sweden's and Finland's security priorities, and we expect the same approach from the two Scandinavian countries,” Cavusoglu highlighted.
