Saakashvili Transferred to Intensive Care Unit
Former President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili is being transferred to the intensive care unit in serious condition, stated Giorgi Chikadze, a member of his founded "United National Movement" opposition party.
"I just spoke to my personal doctor... The health condition of the President (former President Saakashvili - ed.) is assessed as serious, and it is vital for his life that he be moved to the intensive care unit. The intensive care unit is being prepared at this moment," Chikadze told reporters.
Family members of Saakashvili have informed the newspaper about the politician's serious condition. Earlier, independent doctors reported that Saakashvili had been poisoned with heavy metals. The Tbilisi City Court is considering the possibility of extending Saakashvili's imprisonment for the purpose of treatment in a clinic abroad.
Saakashvili was arrested in Georgia on October 1, 2021. The political figure has been sentenced in absentia for the murder of banker Sandro Girgvliani and for the assault of MP Valeri Gelashvili. In the first case, Saakashvili received a three-year prison sentence, and in the second case, six years.
Additionally, he is accused of dispersing opposition rallies on November 7, 2007, damaging the "Imedi" television station, and embezzling state budget funds, which are still under investigation by the courts. Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili has stated that Saakashvili will remain in prison for a long time.
