Borrell: 'Sanctions Are Not Considered in This Case' Regarding the Lachin Corridor
Since early December 2022, the European Union has been closely monitoring events occurring along the Lachin corridor and their humanitarian implications. This was stated in response to a formal inquiry by European Parliament member Assita Kanko to the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell.
'The EU has called on Azerbaijan to take measures within its jurisdiction to ensure freedom and security of movement along the corridor, in accordance with its obligations arising from the trilateral statement of November 9, 2020,' the document states.
It is noted that Borrell and the EU Special Representative Toivo Klaar are in close contact with both sides. The response also addresses the deployment of an EU mission in Armenia for two months in 2022 and the current deployment of a new EU civilian mission for two years, in accordance with Armenia's request.
'The mission's aim is to contribute to stability in Armenia's border regions, strengthen trust locally, and create conditions that will facilitate efforts aimed at the normalization of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan, which the EU supports,' the document outlines.
Regarding the inquiry into the imposition of restrictive measures against Azerbaijani authorities, it was noted: 'Sanctions are just one tool for promoting the objectives of the EU's overall foreign and security policy, and they are not considered in this case.'
