EU Civil Mission Approved in Armenia with a 2-Year Mandate

The European Council today reached an agreement to establish a European Union civilian mission in Armenia under the framework of the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP). The mission aims to contribute to stability in Armenia's border regions, foster trust on the ground, and facilitate the EU-supported efforts for the normalization of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

“The establishment of the EU mission in Armenia marks the beginning of a new phase of EU engagement in the South Caucasus. The EU will continue to support de-escalation efforts and work closely with both sides to achieve the ultimate goal of sustained peace in the region,” stated EU High Representative Josep Borrell.

The EU civilian mission will initially have a mandate for two years, and its operational headquarters will be located in Armenia. The operations will be led by Stefano Tomat, who is the Director of Civilian Planning and Conduct Capability. A mission head will be appointed soon to oversee operations on the ground.
