Tehran and Baku Should Not Allow Deterioration of Relations: Abdollahian
The Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian had a phone conversation with Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, during which he emphasized that both sides should not allow the incident at the Azerbaijani embassy to negatively affect their relations. This was reported by IRNA, where Abdollahian expressed his condolences and condemned the incident.
He suggested that the security agencies of both countries continue to investigate the various aspects of the incident in close cooperation with each other. It was noted that Bayramov welcomed his Iranian counterpart’s proposal. The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry also released a statement about the phone conversation, which was cited by Azerbaijani media. According to these reports, the Iranian Foreign Minister promised the strictest punishment for the person who attacked the Azerbaijani embassy in Tehran.
For his part, Bayramov described the occurrence as a terrorist attack and reminded that based on the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, the Iranian side is obliged to protect the embassy building from all kinds of attacks and ensure the safety of its staff.
According to the statement, Bayramov also demanded that Iran promptly hold the attacker accountable, conduct a thorough investigation, and identify and punish other participants involved in the organization and execution of the crime.
According to information from the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry, Abdollahian reported that an investigation is currently ongoing by Iranian law enforcement regarding this matter, and the security level of the Azerbaijani embassy and its staff has been heightened.
This morning, a armed attack occurred on the Azerbaijani embassy in Iran, resulting in the death of the head of the diplomatic mission's security service, with two others being injured.
