Protests Erupt Again in Peru: Congress Calls for President's Resignation

A group of leftist lawmakers in Peru's Congress has initiated a motion for the impeachment of President Dina Boluarte, local RPP radio reported on Wednesday.

The parliamentarians believe that the head of state is unable to govern the country due to ongoing mass protests and is also responsible for the deaths of people during efforts to suppress unrest. “Neither Ms. Boluarte nor any members of her Cabinet wish to resign, despite the fact that our people continue to endure horrific massacres. In this situation, no other term can be used,” cited portions from lawmakers by the radio.

To accept the request for discussion in Congress, the support of 66 out of 130 lawmakers is required, while 87 votes are needed for the declaration of impeachment.

Protests erupted in Peru following the ousting of President Pedro Castillo on December 7, 2022. Participants demand the resignation of President Dina Boluarte, the closure of Congress, and new elections. The demonstrations have been accompanied by roadblockades in regions, attacks on airports, and clashes with representatives of the authorities. So far, more than 50 people have lost their lives due to the violence, with hundreds more injured.
