EU Imposes New Sanctions on Iran
The EU Council announced on Monday, January 23, additional restrictive measures related to human rights violations in Iran.
"The Council has decided to add 18 individuals and 19 entities to the list of those subject to restrictive measures under the regime of human rights sanctions against Iran," the statement from Brussels reads.
The document explains that this is due to the role these individuals played in the "widespread and disproportionate use of force against peaceful protesters" following the death of young Iranian Mahsa Amini, who was detained by the police.
The report notes that among those included in the sanctions list are representatives of the government and parliament of Iran, political and media figures, as well as senior representatives of Iran's security forces, including members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
