Soldier Hamlet Davtyan, Victim of Fire in Barracks, Participated in September Combat Actions

On January 19, 2023, the remains of conscript soldier Hamlet Spartak Davtyan, who perished in a devastating fire that broke out in a military barracks, were laid to rest with military honors at the cemetery in his hometown of Martuni. As reported to Armenpress by the Martuni city hall, Hamlet was bid farewell by his relatives, fellow townspeople, and friends at the Holy Mother of God Church. A wake was held by the clergy of the Gegharkunik Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church.

Attending the wake and final farewell were Armenia's Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure, Gnel Sanosyan, Gegharkunik Governor Karen Sargsyan, Martuni community leader Hovhannes Hoveyan, Commander of the Second Corps of the RA Armed Forces Garegin Poghosyan, as well as leaders and staff from security agencies and educational institutions in the Gegharkunik region, alongside other officials.

Hamlet Davtyan was born in 2002 in the Gegharkunik region of Armenia. He studied and graduated from Martuni’s Melik-Shahumyan Number 1 Primary School between 2009 and 2018 and then continued his education in the Department of Automated Systems Programming at the Gegharkunik Regional State College. After three and a half years of studies, he left school to join the army in early February 2022. He participated in combat operations that ensued following Azerbaijan's aggression in September 2022.

“Hamlet was a very modest and intelligent child, cherished and respected by his teachers and peers. We mourn his loss, an unspeakable pain. But he joined the ranks of our school’s immortal heroes, who dedicated their lives to the defense of the homeland, who proved their patriotism through selflessness. We bow to their holy memory,” said Angela Poghosyan, the director of Martuni Number 1 Primary School, in an interview with the media.

Yura Sukiasyan, the director of Gegharkunik Regional State College, also noted that Hamlet was one of their active and intelligent students. “He had only a few months left to complete his studies and earn his diploma, but he left for military service. He had many noble goals and dreams, which, sadly, he did not get to realize. The entire staff bows to the holy memory of our Hamlet.”

Hamlet Davtyan's relative, Samvel Davtyan, shared that Hamlet had lost his mother before leaving for military service. “He was the only brother to two sisters, the sole male heir of the family. In fact, escaping the deadly clutches of the September 2022 war, Hamlet tragically fell victim to the fire incident along with 14 of his comrades. All of Martuni mourns, all of Armenia mourns,” he stated.
