The EU Will Continue Its Fight Against Iran with Sanctions

The European Union has swiftly responded to the situation in Iran with sanctions and intends to continue acting in the same direction, stated Didier Reynders, a member of the European Commission for Justice, as reported by Interfax.

“The EU Council has added nearly 60 individuals and eight entities to the sanctions list following the death of Mahsa Amini and the brutal repression of protests. To be clear, we will continue to act this way for as long as necessary,” the European Commissioner said on Tuesday evening during a plenary session of the European Parliament, where the EU's response to the protests and executions in Iran was discussed.

Reynders also commented on the EU’s recent condemnation of the execution of Iranian-British citizen Alireza Akbari. According to the EU member, the internal situation in Iran is extremely concerning.

“The protests reflect a sense of desperation among the population; the demonstrators are demanding respect for human rights, human dignity, and real change,” the European Commissioner remarked.

He pointed out the extreme severity of punishments and executions faced by protestors, as well as the brutal treatment and torture of detainees.

“Iranians, like other nations, have the right to hold peaceful protests, and fundamental rights must always be respected,” Reynders stated.

“The European Union must send clear signals to Iran. We have done so so far and will continue. The EU reserves the right to respond to any opportunity,” summarized the European Commission member.
