FTX Crypto Exchange Declares $415 Million Theft by Hackers
The bankrupt FTX cryptocurrency exchange has reported that hackers stole $415 million from its accounts, CNBC reported on Tuesday, citing the company's lawyers and consultants. According to their data, $323 million was taken from FTX.com, the international entity, and an additional $90 million from its American branch.
Additionally, $2 million was withdrawn from Alameda Research hedge fund. It is believed that the theft is connected to a system breach that followed the exchange's collapse in November 2022. According to CNBC, FTX's liquid assets total $5.5 billion, which includes the assets of founder Sam Bankman-Fried in the Bahamas, estimated to be worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
In early November, FTX announced via Twitter that it had filed for bankruptcy, and CEO Bankman-Fried resigned. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is investigating whether the executive was involved in the actions that led to the liquidity crisis. The executive denies all allegations against him.
