UN Must Take Decision on the Opening of Stepanakert Airport - Hakob Jagharyan

The United Nations' mission is to prevent a world where there is "abandonment," and it is within its jurisdiction to assist people caught in disasters. As such, it must make a decision regarding the opening of the Stepanakert airport. This was stated by former Prime Minister's advisor and aviation sector manager Hakob Jagharyan during a program on 24TV.

He noted that there is a Department of Emergency Situations Management at the UN Secretariat, where four programs are currently operating—healthcare, child protection, UN development, and the World Food Program. In his opinion, utilizing the Stepanakert airport is realistic, but the UN must take steps in this direction to provide aid to people who are under blockade.

Addressing security issues, Jagharyan said that Azerbaijan might resort to provocations, which is why it is essential for the UN to guarantee that Azerbaijan does not target airplanes. He emphasized that if Azerbaijan resists the UN's decision despite guarantees and takes such action, it would find itself in an exceptionally unfavorable situation.

Regarding technical issues, Jagharyan believes they are solvable. The airport has radio stations, a control center, and possesses the same capabilities as Yerevan's Erebuni Airport.
