"I would like to ask all of you to offer special prayers for the honored Pope Benedict. Remember him, as he is very ill, asking the Lord to comfort and support him," said Francis.

Benedict XVI, 95 years old, served as the leader of the Roman Catholic Church from April 2005 until his resignation in February 2013. He was the first pontiff in 600 years to resign, citing age as a primary factor limiting his ability to fulfill papal duties.
