Iran Executes Another Participant of Anti-Government Protests
Iran has executed a second participant of anti-government protests, according to Daily Mail, which recalls that mass protests in Iran began in September following the death of Mahsa Amini. Protesters are demanding an end to clerical rule in the country.
Majidreza Rahnavard was hanged on Monday, having been found guilty of inciting “war against God.” Officially, Rahnavard was charged with stabbing two members of the Basij paramilitary forces who were involved in suppressing the protests.
Rahnavard was executed publicly in the same city where his alleged crimes took place. It is worth noting that last week, for the first time, a protest participant was executed; this refers to Mohsen Shekari.
Widespread protests erupted in Iran following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini on September 17. She was arrested by police on September 13 for “improper wearing of a hijab” and died on September 16. In response, residents of dozens of cities across Iran took to the streets.
The Norway-based Iranian Human Rights Organization reports that over 200 people have died during the protests. Iranian media reports that around 60 members of the security forces have been killed during the unrest. To date, 11 people have been sentenced to death for participating in the protests.
