Is the Germany National Team Falling Apart? What Caused the Conflict Within the Group
The Germany national team has reportedly split into two camps: the players from Bayern Munich and the others, according to Sport Bild. Head coach Hans-Dieter Flick has been accused of favoritism towards the Bayern players, leading to disagreements within the team. Flick has struggled to unite the entire squad.
The issues began before the opening match against Japan (1-2) during the group stage. The debate surrounding the One Love armband was ignited the day before the match by Manuel Neuer and Leon Goretzka, who insisted that the team photo should feature a gesture of protest by putting their hands over their mouths. The other players were reluctant to participate in any political demonstration.
During the match against Japan, many players were confused by Flick's decision to substitute Goretzka in for Ilkay Gundogan. There was a belief within the team that the substitution was made to keep Goretzka satisfied. Goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen and Kai Havertz were also displeased that they had been left on the bench for parts of the World Cup matches.
Ter Stegen was frustrated not to receive an opportunity to play despite his performances at the club level. Additionally, Borussia defender Niklas Süle, who had played under Flick at Bayern, took the field despite a poor display in the first game, while Nico Schlotterbeck and Matthias Ginter have yet to see any playing time.
