In the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2022, the French national team defeated Poland 3-1, advancing to the quarter-finals, reports Armsport.
French President Emmanuel Macron shared photos of today's goal scorers Olivier Giroud and Kylian Mbappe on his Facebook page, writing: "On to the quarter-finals."
The match saw a fast pace from the very beginning. Throughout the first half, both teams launched continuous attacks and threatened each other's goals. First, Lewandowski and then Mbappe had dangerous opportunities. The Polish team could have opened the scoring at the end of the first half with two consecutive shots on goal; the ball was first deflected by Lloris' knees, and then a defender neutralized the next shot in front of the goal.
In the 44th minute, Giroud received a pass from Mbappe in the opponent's penalty area and sent the ball past Szczesny, becoming the top scorer in the history of the French national team.
The second half remained very active; this time, the French applied more pressing, which paid off. In the 74th minute, following a pass from Dembélé, Mbappe scored with a sharp shot just outside the penalty area. In the first minute of stoppage time, Mbappe also completed his double.
In the 9th minute of added time, the referee awarded a penalty kick for handball against the French team. Lewandowski's initial attempt was saved by Lloris, but the referee ordered a retake due to a pitch invader. This time Lewandowski was accurate, bringing the score to 3-1.
France continues its pursuit in the tournament.
