When Will December's Lowest Temperature Be Observed? What Weather is Expected This Month
The Hydro-Meteorological and Monitoring Center has presented the climatic characteristics and weather forecast for the month of December. It is noted that in December, the sun's height above the horizon continues to diminish in the northern hemisphere, leading to a decrease in daylight duration.
Cold air currents mainly dominate the atmosphere over the territory of the republic, with particularly severe frosts observed when invading cold air comes from Western Siberia or Scandinavia.
"January is the coldest month of winter; however, in 18-20% of winters, December has been the coldest. Typically, the lowest temperature in December is recorded during the third decade of the month. The relative humidity of the air in December is quite high, at 70% or more, while the average precipitation amounts to 38 mm," the statement said.
It is also mentioned that in mountainous areas, snow cover reaches 20-30 cm, while in the warmer regions of the republic, stable snow cover does not form during the first and second decades of December. December is characterized by frequent fog.
On December 21, the winter solstice occurs, marking the longest night and the shortest day in the northern hemisphere, after which the duration of the day begins to gradually increase.
