VIDEO: Riots in Brussels Due to Belgium-Morocco Match; Injuries Reported

Riots have erupted in the capital of Belgium following Morocco's victory over Belgium in the World Cup. This has been reported by Interfax. After the match taking place in Qatar, where Belgium lost 0-2, disturbances and clashes occurred between football fans and police in the center of Brussels.

“I strongly condemn the incidents that occurred after noon. The police have already interfered with full force. I advise fans not to come to the city center. The police will use all means to maintain public order. I have instructed the police to continue the administrative arrests of the rioters,” wrote Brussels Mayor Philippe Clos on social media.

More than a hundred young people set fire to trash cans, damaged cars, and vandalized the city’s decor. They resisted the police, who were forced to use water cannons and tear gas to disperse the aggressive crowd.

The situation began to escalate after Morocco's first goal was disallowed. At the South Station and the historical Brussels Stock Exchange, dozens of fans, some draped in Moroccan flags, began to violently express their dissatisfaction with that decision. As the second half began, tensions increased further. Trash cans were set on fire, fireworks exploded, and cars were damaged. Rocks were thrown at the police.

Additionally, several filming crews from RTBF were attacked, with one journalist sustaining injuries. Law enforcement blocked the neighborhood to vehicle traffic, creating significant congestion in the city center. Several metro stations were closed on police orders.

“Football should be a celebration,” stated Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo, who also condemned the riots occurring in the capital of the kingdom.
