Lavrov: Zelensky Was 'Engaged' with Optimists and Inventors Club at That Time
Ukraine's goal of 'recovering' Crimea will fail, stated Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, according to RIA Novosti.
“By loudly proclaiming the direction that was being taken at that time (before February 2022 - editor's note) 'hybrid', and now on the battlefield, Zelensky claims that they will 'win this war and reclaim all their lands', including Crimea. He forgets the history of the peninsula. Perhaps he was completely unaware of this while he was 'engaged' with the Optimists and Inventors Club. I have no doubt that such a direction will fail,” Lavrov said.
Crimea became a Russian region after a referendum held in March 2014, following a coup in Ukraine. During the referendum, 96.77% of voters in Crimea and 95.6% in Sevastopol voted in favor of joining Russia.
Ukraine still considers Crimea to be its temporarily occupied territory, and many Western countries support Kyiv on this issue. In turn, the Russian leadership has repeatedly stated that the residents of Crimea voted in favor of democratic reunification with Russia, fully in accordance with international law and the UN Charter. According to Russian President Vladimir Putin, the issue of Crimea is “finally closed.”
