FIFA Forces Teams to Abandon Rainbow-Armbands: What Awaits LGBTQ+ Supporting Players at the World Cup?

Seven football teams, including England's national team, have been forced to abandon wearing rainbow-colored armbands at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, which were intended to show their solidarity with the rights of the LGBTQ+ community. The pressure comes from FIFA.

Players who support LGBTQ+ rights through armbands could face yellow cards, as reported by Bloomberg. “We are very disappointed by FIFA's decision; we consider this unprecedented,” stated a joint statement from the football associations of England, Wales, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland.

In Qatar, where the World Cup is being held, same-sex marriages are prohibited. The LGBTQ+ community believes that player support is crucial for those who feel discriminated against in Qatar. In response to criticism, FIFA announced it would only allow team captains to wear armbands denoting “the unacceptability of discrimination.”
