Kyiv Provided Baku with White Phosphorus Munitions Used in Nagorno-Karabakh: Menendez

The chairman of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Robert Menendez, has announced that Kyiv supplied Baku with white phosphorus munitions, which were used during the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war, TASS reports.

During hearings in the committee regarding the use of this banned munitions by the Azerbaijani armed forces, he noted that they were supplied by Ukraine.

The Geneva Convention prohibits the use of munitions containing white phosphorus when it can cause civilian casualties. It is worth recalling that during the 44-day war, the Azerbaijani side used white phosphorus munitions in forest areas of Artsakh, where civilians were sheltering, between October 29 and 31.

On November 6, Armenia’s Human Rights Defender Armen Tatoyan stated that weapons of mass destruction were used in populated areas. These include the communities of Nngi, Sghnakh, Aknaghbyur, Taghavard, Togh, and Karin Tak, whose forests are located directly adjacent to residential areas, as close as 100 meters away.

Typically, weapons containing white phosphorus are detonated near the ground to minimize their subsequent dangerous effects. However, the shells used in the Shusha region exploded significantly higher, dispersing the toxic substance over a wider area.
