Why Mkhitaryan Left the National Team of Armenia: The President of the FFA Responds

The president of the Football Federation of Armenia, Armen Melikbekyan, answered questions regarding the possible return of former national team captain Henrikh Mkhitaryan in an interview with Vivaro Media.

- Why did Henrikh Mkhitaryan leave the Armenian national team? What issues exist, and is resolution possible?

- I don’t think the issue is related to the football federation. We have repeatedly stated, and I reiterate, that the doors of the Armenian national team are always open for Henrikh Mkhitaryan. He is such a professional that I am sure it is his decision. Mkhitaryan realized that it was time to step back. Of course, it would be desirable for him to return. I have often said that the president of the FFA should not participate in the selection of the team, which is why I don’t want to talk too much until the appointment of a coach; however, I am confident that we will discuss this topic together. For this reason, we are not organizing a farewell match for Henrikh Mkhitaryan, hoping that one day he will change his decision. If that does not happen, I will respect that decision just as much.

- No, I have not spoken about his decision.

- Is the football federation ready to take the first step and talk to Henrikh?

- The Football Federation of Armenia is ready to do everything for Henrikh Mkhitaryan to return.
