Abdollahian and Borrell to Negotiate on Restoring Nuclear Program

The Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian will hold a phone conversation on Wednesday with Josep Borrell, the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, to discuss the restoration of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action concerning Iran's nuclear program.

Abdollahian announced this during a joint press conference in Tehran with his Syrian counterpart Faisal Mekdad, as reported by TASS.

“Today I will have a phone conversation with Mr. Borrell, the head of European diplomacy, regarding the status of the negotiations and the further steps required from the parties,” quoted the minister by the ISNA agency.

The nuclear program agreement was signed in 2015 by Iran with the permanent five members of the UN Security Council and Germany to address the crisis concerning nuclear development. Former U.S. President Donald Trump decided to withdraw from this agreement in 2018. Current U.S. President Joe Biden has repeatedly indicated willingness for Washington to return to the nuclear agreement.

Since April of last year, Russia, the United Kingdom, Germany, China, the United States, and France have been negotiating with Iran in Vienna to restore the program in its original form. Numerous attempts have been made to restore the agreement since 2021, which have yet to yield results.
