Washington Accuses Moscow of Misleading Intentions Towards Armenia and Azerbaijan
Washington has accused Moscow of spreading disinformation regarding its intentions towards Armenia and Azerbaijan. "There continues to be disorienting information, or rather, likely disinformation coming from Moscow when it comes to our intentions related to Armenia and Azerbaijan. The United States has been a partner to both countries for decades," said State Department spokesperson Ned Price.
According to him, "there is no greater advocate for the sovereignty and independence of the countries in the South Caucasus, including Armenia and Azerbaijan, than the U.S."
"The restoration of Armenia and Azerbaijan's independence in 1991 was a pivotal event. We engage with Armenia and Azerbaijan solely for one purpose—to end the violence and put these countries on a path to stable and comprehensive peace. We have urged and made it clear to these countries that they should meet in a format that is most beneficial for them. We believe in the utility of direct dialogue for resolving issues and achieving sustainable peace," he stated.
"I will not specifically comment on the efforts of the Russian Federation; I will only say that it is these two countries that must decide which approach they will adopt in the upcoming negotiations. The world knows Russia's history when it comes to its neighbors. The 2008 Russian invasion of Georgia and the ongoing brutal invasion of Ukraine show that Moscow does not respect the sovereignty of its neighbors and is unlikely to be a reliable partner in the long term. Our only goal is to help these countries end the violence and establish the stable and comprehensive peace that the peoples of Armenia and Azerbaijan so desire," Price concluded.
