French Senate to Discuss New Resolution for Sanctions Against Azerbaijan Next Month

In response to the letters from the Chairman of the Permanent Commission on Defense and Security of the National Assembly of Armenia, Andranik Kocharyan, dated September 14 and October 3, the head of the French delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, Anne Genetet, has made a statement in support of the territorial integrity of the Republic of Armenia and the security of the Armenian people. This was reported by Lurer.

“On behalf of the French delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, we would like to reaffirm our unwavering commitment to the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and security of Armenia. Our thoughts are with the many victims and their families due to the recent clashes. France stands in full solidarity with the Armenian people. The President has publicly reiterated France's determination to ensure dialogue and the continuation of negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan, aiming to establish lasting peace in the region. Together with its partners, our country prioritizes supporting the release of all Armenian prisoners who are still detained and returning to the conditions of the ceasefire regime established on November 9, 2020, while maintaining the troops in their original positions.

The Security Council has held two meetings under the presidency of France on September 15 and 16. Following the invitation of the President of the Republic and the President of the European Council, a meeting took place between your Prime Minister and the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan within the framework of the European Political Community summit. Like France, Armenia and Azerbaijan reaffirmed their commitment to the UN Charter and the Declaration of Alma-Ata of 1991. Border commissions are expected to convene soon in Brussels. We hope that the EU civilian mission will help build trust and thereby facilitate their work. The direction of the OSCE fact-finding mission will also contribute to this.

Rest assured that we will continue to support all efforts aimed at ceasing hostilities, ensuring the stable maintenance of the ceasefire regime, and the peaceful resolution of all unresolved issues. In 2020, both our chambers adopted resolutions, one in the National Assembly regarding the protection of the Armenian people and Christian communities in Europe and the East, and the other in the Senate recognizing the Republic of Artsakh.

Next month, the Senate will discuss a new resolution for imposing sanctions against Azerbaijan and will demand its immediate withdrawal from the territory of Armenia, ensuring compliance with the November 9, 2020 ceasefire agreement and the promotion of any initiatives aimed at establishing lasting peace between the two countries,” the text of the statement reads.
