Turkey Concerned: What is Widely Discussed in the Turkish Press
The Turkish press is extensively discussing Greece's deal with Germany, wherein the latter is set to supply military equipment worth €5 billion to Greece, which has tense relations with Turkey. This has been reported by ermenihaber.
The Turkish side views this deal as a step that could further escalate the existing tensions. Since the crisis with Turkey in the Eastern Mediterranean in 2020, Greece has been taking measures to ensure its sovereignty and security. As part of this policy, Greece is particularly receiving substantial military assistance from the United States.
The Turkish side is concerned that now Germany is also entering the fray. This deal is expected to be realized during German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's visit to Athens on October 27.
The armament program includes:
- Purchase of 205 new “Lynx KF-41” armored combat vehicles. Production is planned to take place in a factory that will be built in northern Greece.
- Modernization of 190 “Leopard 1” tanks.
- Modernization of 183 “Leopard 2” tanks.
- Modernization of 4 “MEKO” type frigates.
According to calculations, the overall modernization of 337 “Leopard” tanks will cost €2 billion, the purchase of 205 armored vehicles will amount to €1.4 billion, and the modernization of 4 frigates will cost €600 million.
