"Azerbaijan has Occupied Part of Armenian Territory": Borrell on Armenian-Azerbaijani Relations
The head of EU foreign policy, Josep Borrell, stated during a discussion in the European Parliament regarding tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan that the EU has done everything possible to urge the parties towards dialogue and to establish a ceasefire.
"It is clear that Turkey continues to support Azerbaijan, and we ask Turkey to use its influence to reduce tensions between the two countries," Borrell said.
According to Borrell, the opening of borders between Armenia and Turkey would help alleviate the tension. "I want to see peace in the South Caucasus and in many other regions where it is needed. Unfortunately, we only have political influence as a means. In the region, we have a special envoy who is in constant contact with the two countries and European members of the Minsk Group. We also offer humanitarian assistance, and that is what we can do," Borrell noted.
Borrell emphasized that Azerbaijan has occupied part of Armenian territory. "Azerbaijan has bombarded and seized part of Armenian territory, using artillery and drones in areas belonging to Armenia. What is happening is a terrible pain; 300 servicemen have lost their lives, 207 of whom are Armenians. There are occupied territories, which is absolutely unacceptable and demonstrates a lack of respect for internationally recognized borders. The armed forces are so close that there is a risk of new conflict," said the EU foreign policy chief, adding that Azerbaijan must withdraw its armed forces.
Borrell also spoke about the video of the execution of prisoners of war, stating that the footage of the execution of Armenian prisoners of war is "horrific" and emphasized that an investigation is required.
