VIDEO: The Underpass in Front of the 'Closed Market' is Being Renovated. What Will It Look Like?

The underground pedestrian underpass in front of the 'Closed Market' is undergoing renovation. The area is being cleared of years of accumulated debris and worn-out, broken tiles. This has been reported by the media department of Yerevan Municipality.

“The tiles on the stair landings had undergone design changes; they were shifting and rather dangerous,” said the constructor.

“We aimed to slightly deepen the area, but since it has a very strong network foundation, we tried to avoid influencing the architecture. The work is estimated to cost around 50 million drams. We will have a covering on the stairs. Water drainage will be organized by pumps. The main goal is to make it compatible with the city center,” noted Khoren Grigoryan, acting head of the construction and improvement department of Yerevan Municipality.

Basalt and travertine tiles will be replaced with new tiles made from the same materials. The area will be completely illuminated, and benches will be installed along the edges of the columns. The underpass will become clean and comfortable for pedestrians.

“The underpass will feature a suspended ceiling, LED lighting, and metal railings. The only issue that we cannot solve at this time is ensuring the ramp, which is due to the height of the underpass,” stated the constructor.

The completion of the works is planned by December 25. The underground pedestrian underpass of the 'Closed Market' is community property; however, if investment projects arise, the community is ready to discuss them.

“Each of us should ensure that the underground passages serve their purpose. Next in line, for which the technical assignment is being developed at this moment, is the underground pedestrian underpass between Paronyan and Lusavorich streets,” said Khoren Grigoryan.

To ensure citizens' safety and comfort, the underpasses will be renovated sequentially.
