Moldova Threatens to Strip Citizenship from Those Who Fight for Russia
The President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, has announced a threat regarding the recruitment of soldiers from the unrecognized breakaway region of Transnistria into the Russian army, stating that such individuals could lose their Moldovan citizenship, according to TASS.
"There is a danger of the mobilization of Moldovan citizens in the eastern regions of the Republic of Moldova. To prevent such actions, we are analyzing the possibility of stripping Moldovan citizenship from those who hold Russian citizenship and have agreed to fight for the aggressor. We are also considering the possibility of stricter penalties for Moldovan citizens who wish to become mercenaries," the President stated after a meeting of the Supreme Security Council.
Additionally, Chișinău will request the Russian Federation not to recruit Moldovan citizens residing in that country. "I have asked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration to initiate bilateral consultations with the Russian Federation to exclude cases of recruiting Moldovan citizens residing in Russia during the mobilization process. The Ministry will also provide support to Moldovan citizens wishing to return home from Russia," Sandu stated.
It is noteworthy that against the backdrop of the special military operation in Ukraine, the President of Russia declared a partial mobilization.
