Why Are the Statues of Armenian Greats Being Desecrated: 'Hraparak'
‘Hraparak’ newspaper writes: ‘Months ago, we learned that the statue of national hero Leonid Azgaldyan was broken, and now they have moved on to the statues of Armenian greats. We discussed the desecration of the busts of Komitas, Sevak, Tumanyan, Aram Khachaturian, Martiros Saryan, and dozens of others located in the central park of Jermuk with architect Arsen Garnikyan from Jermuk.
He mentioned that the building where the vandalism occurred has an owner. ‘That building has already been sold four times. It has changed hands; I am not aware of who currently owns it. Therefore, neither I nor the city hall has any leverage to take action in this regard,’ the architect said.
As for whether there have been other cases of vandalism in Jermuk, perhaps those have not been reported. The architect suggested that this is likely the first such incident, as he would have been aware if there had been others. For more details, see today’s issue of the newspaper.’
