VIDEO: Protesters Storm Government Headquarters in Iraq and Have Fun in Pool

Meetings of the Iraqi government have been postponed as protesters stormed the government headquarters in Baghdad, according to a statement from Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Kazimi.

Hundreds of supporters of influential Shia political leader Muqtada al-Sadr stormed the government building in Baghdad following his announcement of withdrawing from politics. The protesters also entered the Republican Palace, the government headquarters located in the Green Zone, where clashes erupted between them and law enforcement.

“The Prime Minister and the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces have instructed the Cabinet to suspend meetings until further notice due to the intrusion of a group of protesters into the government palace,” the statement said.

On Monday, Muqtada al-Sadr, whose supporters continue protests in parliament, declared that he is withdrawing from politics permanently. The influential Shia cleric and political figure hinted that he could be killed.

Iraqi authorities announced a curfew for the entire Baghdad starting at 15:30.
