Borrell Announces Agreement Between Serbia and Kosovo
The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, has announced an agreement between Serbia and Kosovo.
“I am pleased to announce that we have found a solution that facilitates travel between Serbia and Kosovo, which is in the interest of all citizens of Serbia and Kosovo,” Borrell wrote on his Twitter microblog.
He noted that there is an agreement allowing Serbian citizens in Kosovo, as well as other citizens, to travel freely between Kosovo and Serbia using their identification cards.
On July 31, the situation in Kosovo and Metohija sharply escalated after the Kosovo police closed the checkpoints along the administrative line with Serbia. The reason was a new decision regarding the prohibition of entry with Serbian documents.
In response, Serbs in Kosovo protested and blocked major highways. As a result of international forces' efforts, Kosovo decided to postpone the implementation of the ban on Serbian documents until September 1, after which EU-mediated negotiations began between Serbia and Kosovo.
