Ukrainian Armed Forces Shell Europe’s Largest Nuclear Power Plant

Four shells fell in the radioactive isotope storage area following shelling of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant by Ukrainian forces, local authorities in Enerhodar reported to RIA Novosti.

The statement noted that after the incident, the radiation background remains normal. The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) is located on the left bank of the Dnipro River, near Enerhodar. It is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe by both the number of reactors and installed capacity. Since March, it has been under the protection of Russian military forces.

Ukrainian troops continue to regularly shell the city and surrounding areas of the plant.

A visit by a team of experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is expected in the near future.

As French President Emmanuel Macron noted, both Russia and Ukraine have provided security guarantees for the mission’s deployment.
