Borrell Calls Situation Around Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant Alarming: What Is Happening

The head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, has described the situation around the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant as "extremely alarming" and emphasized the need to allow IAEA experts to approach the facility.

Earlier on Friday, the press service of the Enerhodar administration reported to RIA Novosti that Ukrainian forces had launched new artillery strikes towards the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station. The interlocutor detailed that no damage had been inflicted on the station's infrastructure and key nodes.

"The situation around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant remains extremely concerning. Russia must ensure unhindered repair of damaged lines and the full reconnection of the plant to the Ukrainian power grid," Borrell wrote on Twitter.

On Thursday, the State Duma adopted a statement during an extraordinary session addressed to the UN, IAEA, and international parliamentary organizations regarding the threats stemming from the shelling of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant by Ukrainian military forces.

ZNPP is located on the left bank of the Dnieper River, near Enerhodar. It is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe by the number of reactors and installed capacity. Since March, it has been under the protection of Russian military forces.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has emphasized the rationale behind the protection of the nuclear power plant by Russian troops, citing the need to prevent nuclear and radioactive material leaks.

Ukrainian military forces continue to regularly shell Enerhodar, surrounding villages, and the area adjacent to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.
