The Probability of Finding Survivors Gradually Decreases, Says Rescue Service Colonel
The probability of finding survivors in the Surmalu shopping center is gradually decreasing. This was stated by Colonel Bagrat Vardazaryan, deputy head of the Rescue Service's rescue forces management, during a conversation with journalists.
“It is clear to all of us that the longer time passes, the lower the probability of survivors being alive becomes, it is nearly zero,” he said.
Vardazaryan does not share the family's view that the rescuers are acting slowly. According to him, this is not slowness but caution due to existing risks and safety requirements.
“There is a risk of building collapse, there are reinforced concrete constructions that need to be removed in order for us to be able to work. In addition, when the tractor is working and digging, it is possible that the bodies could be harmed, and we are trying to avoid such incidents. In areas where it is difficult to work with tools, we are forced to work mainly by hand,” said Vardazaryan.
It should be recalled that an explosion occurred at the Surmalu shopping center on August 14 at approximately 13:23. The current number of victims is 6, while 18 citizens are considered missing. Treatment continues for 13 injured individuals in various hospitals. A total of 350 rescuers and 150 volunteers are participating in the firefighting operations. Search and rescue operations are ongoing.
