A Safety Buffer Around the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant Must Be Agreed Upon: UN Secretary-General's Call

The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres considers it essential to agree on a safety buffer around the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant at a technical level to ensure the security of the region. This was stated in the announcement of the head of the global organization.

The UN Secretary-General has called on military personnel from Russia and Ukraine to "immediately cease all military operations in the immediate vicinity of the nuclear plant" and to withdraw military troops and equipment from the plant.

"The facility should not be used in any military operations. Instead, it is necessary to urgently draft an agreement at a technical level regarding the demilitarization safety buffer to ensure the security of the area," Guterres stated.

Since the start of the Russian special operations, Ukrainian forces have attempted to attack the power plant several times. A number of shellings resulted in fires on-site, and two power lines essential for the operation of the energy blocks were cut off. Additionally, part of the equipment of Unit 3 was de-energized, and the power output of Unit 4 was reduced.
