But We Had Agreed: Serzh Sargsyan to Journalists
Yesterday, the Armenian men's chess team competed against Spain in the 11th round of the 44th World Chess Olympiad held in India, securing a victory with a score of 2.5:1.5. As a result, the Armenian team finished in second place with 19 points. Uzbekistan claimed the championship title after defeating the Netherlands in the same final round, also finishing with 19 points.
The third president of Armenia and president of the Chess Federation, Serzh Sargsyan, also arrived at the airport to welcome the representatives of the Armenian chess team. "The result achieved by the chess team is outstanding. I believe the guys really performed very well. They were able to represent our country honorably and with dignity at this major sporting event. I want to remind everyone that over the past 30 years, Armenia ranks second in the world in chess achievements, only behind Russia. And if we look at the last 20 years, we are the first in the world with all our achievements. We have been Olympic champions three times, world champions once, and now we hold a silver medal with three bronze medals as well. Chess is still present in our schools, and under the leadership of Smbat Lputyan, new strategic programs related to chess are being developed. These programs are being formulated at the Chess Institute of the Pedagogical University. I believe this is very beneficial and should continue in this way," said Sargsyan during an interview with journalists.
Responding to journalists' comments about how he feels regarding various interpretations of the current government's actions in areas where Armenia has been able to defeat Azerbaijan, he stated, "I wouldn’t want to talk about the current governing authorities in Armenia at this moment; I consider it pointless." He added, "But we had agreed that we would only talk about chess. I can simply remind you that our party released a statement just three or four days ago, where everything is clearly written. At this moment, yes, I have nothing to add, at least nothing to add here," Sargsyan replied to questions from journalists regarding the situation surrounding Artsakh.
