Shakira Could Face 8 Years in Prison

The Spanish prosecutor's office has demanded more than eight years of imprisonment and a fine of over 23 million euros for Colombian singer Shakira in a tax evasion case. According to El Pais, the 45-year-old performer is accused of evading taxes of approximately 14.5 million euros on income earned in Spain between 2012 and 2014.

Shakira allegedly lived in Spain during that time, while also holding residency in the Bahamas. Her lawyers argue that she did not reside in Spain for more than 183 days a year during that period. After this timeframe, an individual automatically becomes a taxpayer of the kingdom.

Ahead of the trial, the prosecutor's office offered Shakira the possibility of replacing imprisonment with a fine in a potential deal. The singer has refused the agreement.
