Turkish Products on the Offensive: 'Fact'

According to the newspaper 'Fact', the issue of Armenian-Turkish relations has been a primary topic on the agenda of the Republic of Armenia for some time now. Discussions are ongoing regarding the opening of the Armenian-Turkish border, about which there seems to be preliminary agreements, and as is known, it will initially open for citizens of third countries.

Alongside this, the government lifted the embargo on the import of Turkish goods at the end of last year, after which the presence of Turkish products in Armenia has significantly increased. According to official statistics, in the first five months of 2022 alone, goods worth approximately $76 million were imported from Turkey. This means that this amount of money has flowed from Armenia to Turkey. Specifically, in January, imports amounted to $8 million, in February to $14.9 million, in March to $18.2 million, in April to $17.9 million, and in May to $17.4 million.

Official statistics indicate that during the same five months in 2021, that is, during the embargo period, only $7.6 million worth of goods were imported from Turkey. This means that the volume of imports from Turkey has increased tenfold.

Experts note that those involved in importing Turkish products are approaching their pre-restriction levels of import volumes. It is noteworthy that exports from Armenia to Turkey remain at a negligible level.

It should be recalled that the ban on the import of Turkish goods was imposed on January 1, 2021, 'considering the numerous established facts according to which Turkey openly supports and assists Azerbaijan in the war and terrorist actions unleashed against the Republic of Artsakh'. Subsequently, on June 24, 2021, the embargo was extended for another six months until January 1, 2022.
