Power Blocs Attempt to Establish a New Balance: 'Pasti'
According to the 'Pasti' newspaper, in just 10 days, Armenia hosted Ali Shamkhani, the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran, William Burns, the head of the CIA, and yesterday, Sergey Naryshkin, the Director of the Foreign Intelligence Service of the Russian Federation. What do these visits signify?
Political scientist Alen Ghahondyan states that power blocs, through negotiations and competition, are trying to establish a new balance in the South Caucasus. 'The world is in a phase of forming a new order, which means that there is a restart situation of the global and regional power balance. It should be noted that the global launch of this was essentially prompted by the Russo-Ukrainian crisis. Currently, various regions of the world are witnessing processes of power reassertion and change, and in the South Caucasus, this process began with the 44-day war. Today there is still no established power balance or status quo in this region, while global and regional power blocs are intensely involved in competition for the region,' Ghahondyan noted in his interview with 'Pasti', adding that these visits by the leaders of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, then the CIA, and now also the Russian FSB should be viewed in this context.
'Moreover, the planned visit of the Russian leader to Iran, where a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is also expected, fits within the same logic. We have a situation where power blocs, negotiating and competing, are trying to establish a new balance in the South Caucasus, with its main focal points being the future orientation of Armenia, the new status of Azerbaijan in the region, Armenian-Turkish relations, the role of Russia in the region, the realism of signing a peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan, as well as the potential realization of Iran's new aspirations and Erdoğan's vision for a neo-Ottoman Turkey,' Ghahondyan explained.
