Disney+ Warns Translators About Armenian Genocide Theme

The American digital platform Disney+, which has around 130 million users, has sent a warning letter to the email addresses of its subtitle translators. The letter includes several warnings related to political processes. These warnings specifically concern the Armenian Genocide, Islamic themes, the Kurdish issue, and the Cypriot problem, reports ermenihaber.am.

According to the source, the company has required its translators to inform Disney+'s officials in Turkey if they notice that filmmakers are addressing the aforementioned themes. Translators have also been instructed to inform the company's leadership if it becomes apparent that filmmakers portray Erdoğan as a dictator or if members of the LGBTIQ+ community are involved in their productions.

In recent years, Turkey's Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) has been urging digital platforms to apply for licenses and open offices in Turkey, threatening sanctions against those that fail to comply. Digital platforms, including Netflix and MUBI, have responded to this call; however, a wide segment of the public considers this an act of censorship.
