President Flees the Country Instead of Resigning

Shri Lanka's President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has fled to the Maldives before resigning, the Guardian reports. He has left the country on a military aircraft, accompanied by his wife and two bodyguards.

It is noteworthy that previously Rajapaksa attempted to escape to the UAE, but airport staff denied him boarding the plane.

Rajapaksa is resigning due to the disastrous socio-economic situation in the country and prolonged protests.
