Which Roads Will Connect Turkey and Azerbaijan

The newspaper "Hraparak" reports that according to point 9 of the trilateral statement dated November 9, 2020, it is stipulated to unblock all economic and transportation links in the region. "The Republic of Armenia guarantees the security of transportation between the western regions of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, ensuring unhindered movement of citizens, vehicles, and goods in both directions. The control over transport communications is carried out by the Border Guard Service of the Russian Federal Security Service. By mutual agreement, the construction of new transportation routes connecting the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic and the western regions of Azerbaijan will be ensured," states the trilateral statement signed at the end of the war.

Although the RA authorities are hesitant to disclose the specific routes that will be unblocked, particularly how Azerbaijan will connect to Turkey and vice versa, discussions are underway in Syunik regarding 4-5 route options to allow Azerbaijanis free movement through Armenian territory. It is uncertain whether all five will be operational or if just one or two will be implemented, as the authorities have not yet revealed this information.

One proposed route is the Qubadli-Vorotan-Khot road, while another is the Bichenek/Nakhchivan-Karvachar direction. The third is the interstate highway connected to the Nakhchivan and Karvachar from the intersection in Noravan village of Sisian. The fourth route is from Qubadli to the Berdzor region of Lachin, passing near the village of Khnjoyresk. There are also discussions about a road stretching from the Berdzor region to Karvachar, as well as a segment stretching above Jermuk towards Karvachar.
