The Situation in Berdzor is Quite Complicated: MP

MP Tigran Abrahamyan from the 'Honor' faction of the National Assembly writes: 'The situation surrounding the city of Berdzor, as well as the villages of Sus and Agavno, is being discussed from various perspectives. The provisions of the trilateral statement of November 9, 2020, are often presented in general terms, and there is potential for negotiations regarding their implementation in a manner conducive to Armenian interests, even achieving minor successes.

The trilateral statement defines the following in relation to an alternative route: 'By mutual agreement of the parties, a project for the construction of a new route along the Lachin corridor must be established within the next three years to ensure the connection between Nagorno-Karabakh and Armenia, after which the Russian peacekeeping contingent will be redeployed to protect that route.'

Those who claim that the exit of the Armenian population from Berdzor, Agavno, and Sus, as well as the transfer of these settlements, is stipulated by the trilateral statement, should provide the relevant formulation regarding this. The alternative route project could have been discussed and approved under a logic whereby the three Armenian communities could remain within a 5 km stretch of the 'Lachin corridor' and not be transferred to Azerbaijan.

I am more inclined to believe that following the 44-day war, under the pressure of Azerbaijan’s blackmail and threats, the implementation of this provision of the trilateral statement is occurring within the framework of Azerbaijani claims. The situation is quite complex, it is not simple, and there are no standard solutions. Any arrangement must be highly calculated; otherwise, further losses will be inevitable.

Negotiations with Azerbaijan on various issues involve a difficult process, and under the current conditions of the Armenian authorities, this does not provide opportunities for a favorable solution for us.'
